Feature Request - Project Links in Today View

Hi Alex/Chris/Wesley,

I was just thinking about your latest blog post on 1.6 (http://www.pocketinf...1&showentry=239) and again it got me excited at where PI is going and where it could go. I had an idea that I wanted to pass by you.

I was looking at the change log topic "Open a Task Project/Folder and you now get stuff like count, percent complete, etc..."

I was thinking that this information (project task count/percent complete/etc.) would be very helpful on the Today screen, and to take it one step further make it a link to the Tasks by Project View - for that Project. I would imagine projects would only show up if there are active tasks in them (ie. Due Today/Overdue). Thoughts?

I was also wondering if the planned 1.60 implementation will allow for project due dates or project priorities? This way, the project links could be sorted as well based on due dates/priorities in the Today view. But that is definitely more advanced.

Thanx for hearing me out :-)

Deleting an instance of recurring event in PI, does not delete in Google

At first I thought this was an intermittent problem but it's now happening every time I try it.

If I delete one instance of a recurring event in PI, that deletion is not reflected in my Google calendar. It's very annoying because I have to make a lot of deletions of single recurrences while I'm out and about, but now I am reduced to making notes of them and deleting them in Google when I get home. If I do the opposite and delete an instance of a recurring event in Google, this deletion is synced to PI correctly.

I don't think it's a problem with Google, because I also keep a sync between Google and Outlook and if I delete a recurring event instance in Outlook, that deletion is synced correctly to Google. Unless of course it's a case of Google messing with stuff at their end again, and the Google Apps Outlook sync tool having being updated to work with those changes. Either way, it's reduced the usefulness of PI considerably for me!

Anyone else having the same problem?

I brought my tasks back to Pocket Informant

Well, I did it...

First, let me say that I have used Pocket Informant since it's Windows Mobile days.

I began using an Ipod Touch (now on an Iphone) back in October to manage tasks, and, of course, Pocket Informant was my first choice, syncing with Toodledo. This worked OK, but I found the lack of support for subtasks at that time was a problem for my work flow.

I started using Appigo ToDo, synced with Toodledo, and it worked great. I had support for subtasks, and a very nice, clean interface. Sure, I didn't have any actions, task start dates, and my subtasks could not be in a different folder than the parent task, but I made do. I also installed Toodledo's Iphone app, and while it works, it just doesn't feel right.

ToDo works well, but it doesn't seem that they pay too much attention to product improvement and updates. I don't think that they have updated the app with any new features since I purchased it. Also, whenever you ask for a feature on their Google group, you will usually get a response like "we have added this to our request log." Ho hum.

With the introduction of Subtask support, PI just may do the trick. I synced it back up to Toodledo, figuring that it would work great. However, none of the sub-tasks were mated to their parents. Working with support, I figured out that it was the fact that my subtasks were created with ToDo. A subtask created in Toodledo would work fine. If I dragged the subtask out of the parent in Toodledo, dragged it back in, and then synced it, the sutask was mated up fine, and worked OK. I spent quite a bit of time working this, but it appears to be in shape just fine now.

A feature that I use now that I like is the ability to have a sub-task in a seperate folder from it's parent, as well as use a separate action. I am also back to using task start dates to monitor starting times of tasks, which is quite helpful.

At any rate, I just wanted to share my experiences, and the fact that PI is quickly heading back to being the best task management solution out there. I am sure that it will continue to get better as more updates come out.

A nice idea for a feature to have: The ability to date and/or timestamp by pushing a button. I routinely keep notes about a task, particularly if I have to defer it, or am waiting for a response. One of the best note taking skills that I have learned is to date stamp, and time stamp if you like, any notes that are entered. When we get this much going on, the only way that you survive is to write a note about the task. If you have to refer back to it a couple of weeks later, it is the only way that you remember. If you had a button for a datestamp, you could just push it, and type away.

It is good to be back. Today was my first full day using PI as my task system, and I was in a panic most of the day, thinking that I was missing something, or something was going un-done. It is just a matter of getting back to trusting my system again. I am sure that I will be fine in a week or so.

Repeating Notifications

I've had a look and cannot find any mention of this.

I use PIIP latest version and WDS latest version on a Windows 7 machine with Outlook 2010.

For most recurring events I am experiencing reminders on the Iphone up to eight times. I dismiss one and another appears immediately and this continues until the eighth has been dismissed. I do not experience the same problem on Outlook. It may also happen on one off events although I haven't specifically noticed it.

Sometimes the problem disappears after a normal sync. However, it reappears within a short period of time.

Mostly the reminder appears with the heading Informant. However, on ocassions, the Informant heading is not there.

I have three calendars - the internal Task, my default and Australian holidays. I do not sync with the IPhone calendar.

I only sync with WDS. I still have old google and toodledo accounts (which have not been used in many months) but they are disabled (in fact, I have deleted them today).

Google calendar sync stuck at "Updating events on Google"

Hi,

My Google syncs have been failing recently, with each sync attempt getting stuck at "Updating events on Google". It would go on forever and not even allow iPhone to dim the screen - one time I forgot about the sync and it drained the battery completely.

I am on PI 1.53 iPhone 4. I use Google Sync (the app) to sync my work Outlook calendar to Google Calendar. My schedule is not full with maybe just 2-3 meetings a day, but I do have some recurring appointments. I think I set up the Google Sync bridge right about the time PI 1.53 came out, so I don't know whether it's Google or PI.

I was initially able to sync with Google using the whole 1.53 and Google Sync (desktop) combo. It was slow but it ultimately worked if I let it be, but now it just gets stuck.

Is this a known PI issue or are there known issues with syncing with a certain type of appointments on Google calendar? If it's a known Google calendar issue, what can I do to ensure PI sync success, e.g. remove certain types of appointments?

Eagerly waiting for PI 1.6!

Thanks!

Task Custom Repeat by Completion Date - Missing Weekly (Day) options

Hi Alex/Chris/Wesley,

Found this one yesterday while playing with 1.53 on my 3GS - not big, but thought I should bring it to your attention.

I was trying to update an existing task (without any repeat) and add a custom repeat such that it repeats based on the completion date. It was going to be run on a weekly basis (and I was going to select M/W/F) but the weekday options are missing. Please see screen capture below
NOTE: This is not an issue when setting by Assignment Due Date (see screen capture below).

a question of speed ?

hi Alex/Chris

so ive got an old 3g -yes its starting to show its age (14 months!) and PI is now loading rather slowly with os4 installed

ive done some testing on it and it seems to be quicker if PI was the last app to be used recently - so im guessing this is something to do with caching etc ?

can the load speed of PI be improved, or is it purely a limitation of the iphone 3g?

Context Location Alerts? (Still confused)

Ok, so this is the first time I've played about with location alerts, and I've got to say they're pretty fricken cool! But I'm a bit confused about their functionality - I've searched on here and read the threads but I still don't fully understand why the GPS arrow is displaying.

I set up a context last night, with location based alerts on, and set the location. Created a new task, assigned that context and waited until I was near the location. Boom! I got an alert! So I mark the task as complete and deleted the test context. So now I have no contexts or location based alerts set up but the GPS arrow is still showing. I've closed PI completely and rebooted the phone. Checked within Settings > General > Location Services and the only app using location services is PI.

Now I understand that if I had a context with location based alert enabled that the arrow should be there, even if the app is closed (and removed from the tray?) but as I don't have any location based alerts surely it shouldn't be using location services? Is this correct functionality of PI or have I found a bug?

Cheers,

syncing with google calendar only works partly

hello,

i am using the newest version of PI for quite a time now and i am really pleased with it. now i would like to upload all my calendar data to my google account so i can edit them also on my pc.

so i added my google calendar data in sync settings, and used the merge & sync option . the effect of this is only partly positive:

I have a total of 6 calendars (media, privy, sport, work, family & muzik). media, privy & sport are uploaded to google calendar, and the sync settings of PI show me the PI/ google icon, so i know they are shared on both systems. however, the remaining calendars (work, family & muzik) are also uploaded to google, but have very weird names (f.e. guussjilucphsbsbaadiga8b2o@group.calendar.google.com). the entries of these calendars do match with work, family & muzik, but now i have them doubled on my iphone, with the strange effect that the calendars with the correct names have only the PI icon, but are completely empty... when i rename the strange name calendars to the original names, i have them double (of course). when i delete the old, empty, PI icon only calendars everything is fine until the new sync - after that those 3 calendars are wiped out completely! (luckily i had made a recent backup in itunes..) so i restored that backup, and tried the whole stuff again. deleted the calendars on google, did a new sync and used the option "upload all data as NEW". unfortunately, the effect is the same as described above.

can anybody help me?

version: 1.53.05 Aug 18 2010 00:09:18

thanks in advance,

Refresh Bug still NOT FIXED in 1.53

Hi Alex and all,

This morning, I complete today's occurrence of a daily recurring task. As in previous versions, the task badge within PI is not updated upon task completion (see attached pic). It does not update itself even when I exit the 'In Progress' filter (the one I spend most time in) and back again. The only way to have it update itself was to exit PI completely or do a outlook sync.

I am not sure if this is directly related to the refresh bug I reported earlier - and whether that has fixed I am also uncertain. I'd be happy to submit another ticket in support, but I don't want to duplicate if it's better for the team to deal with it as a single case. Please advise.

Prospective PI/Google/Outlook user needs advice!

I'm about to switch over to an iPhone and I've been frantically looking for solutions to my Outlook syncing requirements. I have multiple calendars on Outlook that I need synced to the phone, not just for viewing but for editing too. They mainly consist of recurring events with various extras and exceptions to those events. I toyed with the idea of ditching Outlook altogether for Google calendars, but their calendar editing functionality is so lame (no cut/paste etc) and I have also written a couple of scripts to parse exported Outlook data and create invoice info, so I'm pretty much tied to Outlook.

After much reading around it seemed to me that the "done thing" was to get Outlook synced to Google calendars, from which I'd have a better chance of syncing to the iPhone. So I've been looking at iPhone apps that sync with Google calendars. PI seems to be the best solution although I've also looked at CalenGoo. My questions:

1) I really need recurring events and exceptions to be handled seamlessly. If I have a 3 way sync going on (Outlook to Google to PI) is that likely to cause me problems? Even if I'm careful never to have both syncs happen at the same time? I especially don't want to have to deal with duplicated events, or edits to recurrence patterns that don't sync properly from one source to another.

2) Can I sync PI with multiple calendars from my premier Google Apps account? I have one on 30 day trial so I'm not committed to it yet, but the Google/Outlook sync tool that comes with it seems to work very well, so I'm confident about that side of the equation (even though it was a ass to get working what with Google's awful documentation). I guess what would trip me up is if it turns out that PI can only sync with one Google calendar, or can't sync to Google Apps calendars or something.

3) Would I be better off going with the WebIS PI->Outlook sync tool? Is this reliable, especially with regard to my requirements above (I know, I should really post that question in a different forum, but I figured what the hell)?

I really need this to work in order to keep my business running when I make the switch. I'm coming from Blackberry which did some of this stuff brilliantly, although I have my reasons for ditching RIM and besides I could only ever get it to sync my main Outlook calendar to the phone.

Sorry for the long post, any advice would be graciously received!

Task Division Lines on Today View does not Redraw on Task Completion - Please Fix

Hi Alex/Chris/Wesley,

First of all, Great Work on PI!... It is by far the best App on my iPhone.

I wanted to bring to your attention this problem that has persisted for me since 1.40 that has really rendered the Today view useless to me. I was hoping 1.53 would finally fix this for me, but sadly no. So I am asking whole-heartedly that this gets fixed - Today is my favorite view.

To summarize, this is where the division line between tasks does not redraw when a task in the Today view is completed or uncompleted. Instead it remains where it was when the task was completed.

To recreate this issue, the steps are as follows (screen caps will correspond)

Open the Today view - Please note at the bottom, task named "Test 1"

Scroll down the Today view such that the division line of "Due Today" is at the top and covering another pre-existing task

Mark "Test 1" complete by pressing in the check circle on the left

Scroll back up - Please note the "Due Today" division line stays where it was when I completed the "Test 1"

NOTE: This issue also happens when unchecking the Complete circle.
NOTE: To remove this extra bar I have to hard close PI and reopen.
FYI - I am using 1.53 on 3GS

NOTE: This issue does not happen when the "Due Today" division line is not covering a task (ie. covering an event)
I have successfully synced my paid Toodledo app on my iPhone 4 with PI. If I manually press the "sync" button in PI's settings or shake the iPhone while in PI, the calendar will update with whatever changes were made in Toodledo. How can this automatically take place without me having to manually press the sync button? Is there a way for when I open PI that the calendar is already synced with Toodledo?
Help!
Edit: I create the todo in the Toodledo app and want it to sync automatically to PI (if that makes any difference).

How to use PI and Toodledo for GTD projects

I'm confused about how PI is intended to be used with GTD and Toodledo. I've been through the documentation which seems rather light on *how* to use the tool rather than what all the options are. I'm using PI in GTD mode and syncing to Toodledo.

My confusion is in how GTD projects are supposed to be managed. From my point of view a project is a task that consists of multiple other tasks that have an order and a clearly defined next action.

I can see that PI has projects which it maps onto Toodledo folders. PI allows tasks to be associated with a project and reordered. This sounds great. However, projects don't have attributes and sorting or filtering them isn't possible. PI just seems to give me a list of projects without any context. Since I may have hundreds at a time this seems inflexible. It's also very different to the support for tasks where tags and contexts can be applied.

In fact to me Toodledo folders seem more useful just for that, as folders. So, work projects could be separated from home projects and so on by being in separate folders.

So, I've been trying Toodledo Pro which gives subtasks. These look as though they fit my bill. I can't though see how PI expects them to be used though. I can create subtasks of a task. In effect this means the parent task is a project but PI doesn't display it that way. There also doesn't seem any way to reorder subtasks within a task so I can't really see how GTD can be used for subtasks.

So, can anyone offer any advice or suggestions on how PI is supposed to be used to manage projects? How are people managing more than a small number of active projects and how are they keeping project contexts separate?

Thanks.

Icons disapear after sync

Hi,

I've been waiting for the icon month view since the beginning of PI on Iphone. I've been using this on Windows Mobile version for years and find it very useful. I had converted lots of people to PI with it
So as soon it was available I assigned icons to my appointements and switched to the new view.
But I lost my icons several times after a sync with google cal and I just stop using this feature, I can't rely on it if I loose my icons so often.

Is there a solution ? Do you know of this ? Do you plan to do something to correct this ?

Anyway, thanks for the great job and if you make and sell icon packs (like on WM) I'll go for it (if I don't loose my icons of course).

Newbie here. How are new calendars created? PI seems to be preset with 'Work' and 'Family.' New tags can be created by hitting the 'Tags >' entry when creating a new event, and typing in the 'search or create' bar at the top of the screen. The 'Calendar >' entry has no such bar to create new calendars. So what's the secret?

Hello,

I am using PI on my iPhone and I sync my tasks to Outlook 2003 using the WebIS synchronization.
For my tasks I use the Getting Things Done settings, where I can assign contexts and projects. The synchronization works well, I just have one question regarding the transferred data.

Is it somehow possible to see the assigned context and project in Outlook as well?

I delete most of my past events recurring from my Google calendars once the date has passed. These did sync down to PI in the past so that they did not show up there either.
However, after my most recent sync, all of these previously deleted events are now back on PI (although they still do not show on Google).
I had had this problem in the past but it seemed to be solved when I recreated all of my repeating events but now it is happening again.
I have sent my sync logs in and will see what the techies say about this. I'm curious - anyone else having this problem?

This application seems to be exactly what i'm looking for with regards to getting my work/social schedules sorted. However, I do own two seperate devices, (ipad and iphone) and would wish to sync information between the devices. My idea is to sync toodledo between them thru an online account for tasks and use google calender to sync my schedule, i need to know whether this is possible as getting the app for both devices represents a significant investment. Are there any current limitations for this type of sync?

Battery life on iPhone 4 with PI

I always leave PI to run in the background and while I have only PI notifications enabled (GPS is off for PI), I have the impression that battery consumption is not very good. I barely make it through the day and my iphone loses about 4-5% per hour on standby. I uninstalled PI now and the last two days I have a greatly improved battery life! My iphone is still at 97% battery and it was charged yesterday morning. Now, I do not want to say that PI kills my iPhone's battery, but it certainly looks like it leaves some background processes running. I have sync enabled to run every 45 minutes. Is there anything else I can do to improve battery life while using PI, or do you think that PI has nothing to do with my battery issues? thanks in advance.

Time Zone Question

I flew from East Coast US to West Coast. I open PI and now all my appointments are listed as 3 hours earlier. E.g. I have dinner with a friend scheduled in LA for Friday at 7PM which is how I set it up while home. I want to still see it as 7PM here as that is the time we are meeting. But once off my plane I open PI and it now says my dinner is at 4PM.

I don't want any events / appointments to change for time zone changes. How do I accopmplish this? Is there a setting in PI? Is there something I missed?

If I missed an announcement I apologize for this post. I have searched and have found various references to v. 1.53 which I understand is primarily a bug fix, including a Tweet that it would be posted on Monday Aug. 15, but find nothing confirming that. There is a also a tweet that when submitted the bug fix list for 1.53 will be updated. The latest bug fix on the website seems to be for v. 1.50.
So has it been submitted, and if so, when.
Likewise any estimate when v. 1.60 will be submitted.

Pocket Informant: Alarms

I have an iPhone and I installed Pocket Informant yesterday. Unfortunately, there is a problem with the alarms feature. When I set any alarm for an event, the alarm will not go off or activate for the specified amount of time. I have enabled Push Notifications for the Pocket Informant in Settings but any alarm does not work. Is there a solution to this? The "Informant" is basically a calendar, so the alarm feature is of the utmost importance. I mean, IT'S A CALENDAR FOR CRYING OUT LOUD AND A CALENDAR HAS TO HAVE WORKING ALARMS.

IMAP for Idiots (or at least newbies)

Hi all.

I've been using PB for a while now on my Mac, mostly switching for the feature of being able to edit received messages (which I, and many others, were asking for in Thunderbird for many years). I just got an iPhone and was tired of getting/deleting every message two or three times between PB, iPhone, and my mailserver's web interface. So, I upgraded my account and switched to IMAP, which I had read would keep everything synced, like I'm used to with my work email which uses MS Exchange Server.

It mostly works, but my wife (who I just converted) and I still have some occasional weird behavior that I hope someone can explain.

First, sometimes we delete mails and they come back later. It seems this was much worse in PB 1.x and mostly (completely?) fixed in the 2.0 beta. My wife is using vanilla Mac Mail.

The other thing we still don't get totally are the special folders: trash, drafts, sent. It seems like some are shared/synced between platforms (iPhone, Mac, webmail) and others are local. I see Draft, Sent, Trash as special folders in the webmail. However, on the iPhone, I see Drafts (plural), Sent, and Trash as special folders but see another Trash folder under my IMAP Inbox folder. Finally, in PB, I see Drafts, Sent, and Trash under my Inbox folder.
Additionally, the Trash folder on the iPhone and PB shows 21 items in it, but I can't seem to delete the items in there.

Thanks for any clarifications!
